Serelis is currently coaching Lavrio BC and has been on the team's bench since the spring of 2004.
According to gazzetta.gr, after Lavrio's Greek League loss to Kolossos at home on Wednesday afternoon, Serelis met with PAO reps, having been granted permission by Lavrio's management to do so. Per the same source, the Greens made a proposal to the Greek tactician to remain for the next season as an assistant.
Serelis, 48, reportedly accepted the chance to work in a EuroLeague team and take a big step in his coaching career, since Lavrio have already secured their stay in the Greek League, despite their frail 7-13 record.
Panathinaikos's new coaching staff is expected to be officially announced on Thursday. What remains to be decided is Vovoras's second assistant. Isidoros Koutsos, who stood next to Serelis in Lavrio, has gained significant ground. This would mean that Vassilis Simtsak, Dimitris Prfitis's assistant at both UNICS Kazan and Panathinaikos, will also walk through the exit door.
In any case, Chief of Basketball Operations Argyris Pedoulakis, who was the one who chose Giorgos Vovoras as the head coach, will make all the decisions. Ironically, Christos Serelis's debut on Panathinaikos's bench will be in next Sunday's game in Lavrio.
