The 23-year-old guard/forward has shown great improvement on both ends of the court over the course of the season. Panagiotis Kalaitzakis, whose twin brother Giorgos finished the season with the Oklahoma City Thunder, took his first professional steps at Aris and then Holargos.
But his decision to go in 2019 to Nevezis allowed him to get more playing time and raise his stock.
The Greek international had a breakout season with Lietkabelis in the EuroCup, which came to end after his team was eliminated by Virtus Bologna before the quarter-finals.
Kalaitzakis averaged 13.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.2 steals in the regular season, while shooting 59% on two-point shots, 36.2% on three-point shots, and 76.6% on free throws.
"My biggest dream is to play for the Greek national team for years to come. And to play for Panathinaikos, Olympiacos, or any other big Greek team. I never shut doors. Coming back to Greece for sure is an option for me. But to be honest, I would like to play a few more seasons abroad," Kalaitzakis told BasketNews in a recent interview.
Regardless of whether PAO will be able to sign Kalaitzakis this or next season, the Greens are trying to land a point guard who will increase their chances of winning the Greek League. Following Panathinaikos's easy win over Larissa, coach Giorgos Vovoras admitted that the club has its eyes set on the market.
"Even practicing has been tough for us because we don't have a point guard," he said. Stefan Jovic, who signed with the team in January, is still receiving treatment for a contusion he suffered in the adductor. His condition deteriorated as a result of another injury, resulting in him being out for more than two months.
"If we find something really good in the market, we'll look into it," Vovoras commented.
The Greek coach, who registered his second win in his second stint with PAO, was asked about Derrick Walton.
"There are only a few players available. Walton has been proposed to us, but there's nothing more to it for now. We're looking at the market, but we haven't made any decisions yet," he pointed out.
