Friends are those who are always there no matter how far they are or how long it takes to see each other. Those who pick up the phone even if it’s late in the night.

In basketball, there are players who are always ready to jump into the court to help the team. No matter his role or if they are not having as many opportunities as they’d like to.

Sometimes they shine, even though they are not expected to. One of those are Fabien Causeur.

In the playoff opener, the French small forward was the top scorer in Real Madrid's victory on Wednesday against Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv.

Causeur ended the game with 20 points, his second-best mark this season in the EuroLeague, including a 4-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Madrid finally found fluency in their offense, with Fabien making a great contribution to achieving it.

"I always praise Fabien," said Pablo Laso in a post-game conference. "There are days when he plays better and days when he plays worse, but he always does important things for the team. He has also done a good defensive job. Any player at any time can shine."

With Causeur as the traditional shooting guard, Madrid controlled the rhythm and the pace. Shooting 16 from 29 from three definitely helped.

Since his arrival back in 2017, Causer has had an intriguing role at Real Madrid. He has been able to be a key player in several games, he has been ruled out in some others, and he has had a great impact just playing in the second halves.

Whether he starts, comes off the bench, or plays 10 or 20 minutes, Causeur always has something to contribute.

Some people argued he should have won the MVP of the Final Four 2018 at Belgrade, where Madrid overcome Fenerbahce to crown. Doncic was named the MVP.

"I am happy for him. He is a special player. He deserves it," said Causeur after that final.

Again, behind any spotlight.

Causeur is on pace to set his season-high in points averaged with Madrid. He is currently averaging 8.6 points per game, which is his best mark in the EuroLeague since 2016 with Brose Bamberg (9.9).

Causeur, whose contract expires this summer and will turn 35 years old in June, has played more than 300 games with Madrid. And he is still hungry.
