After a career spanning more than 20 years in international basketball, one of the most storied European basketball referees has called it the end.
According to a Eurohoops report, Luigi Lamonica has decided to retire from refereeing following the 2022 EuroLeague Final Four.
Lamonica gained his international license in 1996 and has been at the forefront of the most important and iconic basketball competitions ever since. He has officiated close to 1000 matches throughout his career.
Lamonica has refereed in 2 Olympic Games, 2 World Cups, 6 EuroBaskets, and almost countless EuroLeague Final Fours, starting from 2002 in Bologna and finishing with 2022 in Belgrade.
The Italian referee officiated in this year's EuroLeague final where Anadolu Efes Istanbul defeated Real Madrid in a hard-fought battle.
