Jordi Bertomeu dismissed as EuroLeague CEO after 22 years in the office / News - Basketnews.com
Jordi Bertomeu, who has been the face and the top executive of EuroLeague basketball for more than 20 years, won't continue in his CEO role for the competition going forward.
As reported by the Greek website Gazzetta.gr, the EuroLeague board has decided to confirm that Bertomeu will not continue as the top executive of the competition.
The Spanish teams tried to change the minds of the other clubs, proposing to keep Bertomeu in place at least for another season but that proposal was turned down, according to Gazzetta.
Jordi Bertomeu, though, will remain in a consultant role, at least for the first few months of the transition to a new board of decision-makers.
As his fate was already set during this season, when a majority of the EuroLeague licensed teams decided to have him removed from his position at the end of the season, now the time has come for Bertomeu to step down from his role.
In the past few years, a lot of criticism was raised against Bertomeu's management, especially because the competition struggled to become profitable for the clubs involved.
Serbian legend Dejan Bodiroga is rumored to be one of the main candidates to replace Bertomeu as the top executive of the EuroLeague.
Bertomeu, who also worked as the vice president of ACB, became the CEO of EuroLeague back in 2000 and has been at the helm of the competition since then.
