Romeo Sacchetti sacked from Italy's head coach position / News - Basketnews.com
The Italian Basketball Federation announced that, at the end of a meeting held today in Rome between FIP president Giovanni Petrucci and coach Romeo Sacchetti, the contractual agreement between the parties had been resolved, resulting in the 68-year-old head coach's exit."Sacchetti, who has been in office since September 2017 for a total of 50 matches on the Azzurra bench, deserves a heartfelt 'thank you' for the professionalism and commitment shown over the years and best wishes for the continuation of his career," the announcement reads.
"I ended my journey with Italbasket, a second skin that I have always tried to honor the best way I could," the Italian play caller wrote on Twitter.
"It wasn't up to me and I did not expect it. Thanks to my amazing players - we shared values and experienced incredible emotions. Thanks to the staff and coach (Ettore) Messina," he added.
Last year, with Sacchetti in charge, Italy reached the quarterfinal stage in the Tokyo Olympics, where Azzurri lost 75-84 against France.
In the upcoming FIBA World Cup Qualifiers window, Italy (2-1) will play the Netherlands in Rotterdam on July 4.
Currently, the Italians are standing in the first place in Group H, being followed by Iceland (2-1) and the Netherlands (0-2).
There are only three teams in Group H because Russia was removed from the competition due to the war on Ukraine.
In the upcoming EuroBasket 2022 in September, Italy will face Estonia, Ukraine, Great Britain, Croatia, and Greece in Group C.
