Saturday's event was in response to the May 24 mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde that resulted in 19 students and two teachers being killed.

The 73-year-old specialist expressed his sadness over the tragedy and his general frustration with politicians' responses to it.

"We've heard all of the comments on television from some of our government officials about 'thoughts and prayers and condolences'. They are the same statements after every massacre."

"How many will it take?" he asked rhetorically. "A massacre a month? Two massacres a week? Fifteen kids? Twenty-four kids? When we kill 74 sometimes, then maybe you'll do something. Get off your ass. Do something."

"[Politicians] work for us. The majority of us want them to do something about the gun laws. And they don't do it because they care more about their power, their position, and their money than they do about our children," the Spurs legend spoke.

Popovich reiterated the words of Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr prior to Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals, the same day as the shooting in Uvalde.

"When are we going to do something?" Kerr yelled. "I'm tired. I am so tired of getting up here and offering condolences to the devastated families that are out there. I am so tired of the excuse, I am sorry, I am tired of the moments of silence. Enough!"
