Mitchell's decision to agree to the maximum 5-year contract extension in 2020 was significantly influenced by Snyder. The decision to step down left Mitchell surprised and disappointed, but he remained fond and understood the coach's decision.
Snyder had an impressive record of 372-264 during his 8-year tenure with the Jazz, making him the second-winningest coach in franchise history, just behind Jerry Sloan. Over these years, Snyder had forged a strong relationship with Mitchell and his All-Star teammate Rudy Gobert.
In his five years in the league, Mitchell was an All-Star twice and reached the playoffs in all five seasons with the Jazz. In all five playoff runs, he averaged at least 20 points.
The Jazz were eliminated in the first round of playoffs the past two seasons but had reached the Western Conference semifinals twice in the last five years. Due to this regression in the playoffs, the Jazz are planning to be aggressive this summer in improving the team.
Mitchell still has four years left on his $135 million contract, including a player option on the final season.
