Now, Penarroya is expected to take over the Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz head coaching position right after the Basque team concludes its ACB playoff run. Baskonia are 0-2 down against Real Madrid in the semi-finals, with the elimination game having being scheduled for Tuesday night.
Penarroya won the FIBA Champions League with San Pablo Burgos in 2020 and 2021. He had previously worked in Baxi Manresa and MoraBanc Andorra. This season, he reached the EuroCup semifinals this year and led Valencia to the 3rd place in the ACB regular season, before getting eliminated by his future team, Baskonia, in the playoff quarter-finals (1-2).
According to BasketNews sources, Penarroya will pen a two-year agreement with the EuroLeague club, replacingNeven Spahija who was on an expiring deal.
"A year ago, I arrived excited and grateful for the opportunity to become part of this great organization and now that it is time to say goodbye, I am even more grateful and proud to have been a member of this family," Penarroya said in a statement released by Valencia Basket.
"It's been a season full of setbacks from the start that culminated in the worst way with Martin (Hermansson) getting injured. I am aware that in the end we have not reached the goals we intended, but I am proud of how all of us have worked to overcome the hardships," he noted.
