"I knew my chances of making the team, they told me that it's quite low," Payton II said to ESPN's Malika Andrews. "They had a video coordinator job open, and I was trying to get it."
"I wanted to stay and help around this team. You never know when a 10-day [contract] might pop out in between that video coordinator room.
So, I stayed with it, and the next thing that happened was that they were telling me that they figured it out and I'm staying. No more video coordinator job," Payton II added with a smile on his face.
Warriors guard also added that he genuinely thought he will be helping the team off the court.
"It was very real at that moment. They cut me, and the next step was either to go back to G-League or try to stay here close to the team. I chose to stay close to the team, and I got a call saying that I'm the 15th man. It worked out," Payton concluded.
Throughout his career, Payton II was a part of the Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers, and Washington Wizards. However, for most of the part, he was playing for such G-League teams as Rio Grande Valley Vipers, Wisconsin Herd, South Bay Lakers, Capital City Go-Go, and Raptors 905.
This season, Payton II played in 71 regular-season games and averaged 7.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.4 steals (all career-highs).
