Almost one week after releasing Neven Spahija,Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz announced Joan Penarroya as his successor for the next two seasons.

The 53-year-old tactician arrived at Valencia Basket in the summer of 2021 from Hereda San Pablo Burgos and sat on the team's bench in a total of 58 games, with a balance of 38 wins and 20 losses.

Now, Penarroya takes over the head coaching position right after the Basque team concludes its ACB playoff run. Baskonia are 0-2 down against Real Madrid in the semi-finals, with the elimination game having being scheduled for Tuesday night.

"In this new stage at the head of the Baskonia bench, Penarroya will debut in the highest continental competition, the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. Penarroya won the FIBA Champions League with San Pablo Burgos in 2020 and 2021. He had previously worked in Baxi Manresa and MoraBanc Andorra. This season, he reached the EuroCup semifinals this year and led Valencia to the 3rd place in the ACB regular season, before getting eliminated by his future team, Baskonia, in the playoff quarter-finals (1-2).
