Former EuroBasket and FIBA World Cup champion Alex Mumbru will be assigned as the new head coach of Valencia Basket, sources tell BasketNews.
A 42-year-old Spanish coach will replace Joan Penarroya, who left Valencia for Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz on a two-year agreement.
Valencia Basket officially confirmed the news releasing the announcement that the club signed Mumbru to a three-year contract.
Mumbru has coached Surne Bilbao Basket since 2018. In his head coaching debut, Mumbru led Bilbao to promotion to the Liga Endesa.
The following year, Bilbao jumped into the Top 5 before the coronavirus stopped the Liga Endesa season.
This season, Bilbao finished 9th in the Spanish league.
Mumbru left Bilbao after 13 years, including nine seasons as a player. The club retired his No. 15 jersey and raised it to the Bilbao Arena rafters.
Valencia is expected to receive the wildcard at Thursday's EuroLeague board meeting.
In the 2021-22 season, Valencia fell short in the EuroCup semifinals against Virtus Bologna, which later won the competition.
In the Spanish league, Valencia got eliminated in the quarterfinals.
