Australian women's basketball legend Lauren Jackson is making a comeback to the highest level.
Now 41, Jackson will participate in a national team camp in Canberra next week, 25 years after first being picked for the national team. She is getting ready to play in the Women's Basketball World Cup 2022, which is going to be held in Australia.
Another Australian basketball star, Liz Cambage, was rejected from the team after the details of her outburst against the Nigerian women's team surfaced.
Jackson is a four-time Olympic medalist and a 2006 World champion. Although she last played for the national team in 2013, she is now coming back to play for one last time. Jackson is a three-time WNBA scoring champion, two-time WNBA champion, and a three-time WNBA MVP.
The women's basketball legend has been named into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Her no. 15 shirt has since been retired by Seattle Storm.
In February of this year, Jackson announced about making a comeback for her hometown team Albury Wodonga which plays in an arena named after her. She is averaging a conference-high 32.6 points and 11.6 rebounds in the second-highest league in Australia.
According to the Australian news outlet The Herald Sun, the Australian basketball federation's teams collaborated on a plan with markers Jackson had to hit to take the next step for her to make a successful comeback.
It included loading, lower body strength testing, sprints, and other methods as well as a filmed scrimmage that was later reviewed by NT coach Cheryl Chambers.
"With my size, height, and experience in the game I think what I can bring to the team is invaluable in terms of leadership," she said. "Once I step foot on a basketball court I’m pretty confident, it just comes naturally and has always just been part of who I am.
"I know I can bring that confidence to the girls, I can help them and that’s where I think I can be helpful," Jackson told The Herald Sun. "In terms of my talent and ability to get out there and score buckets, people know I can do that but I think it’s the other stuff that’s going to make a difference."
The Australian basketball world rejoiced after hearing the news, with current NBA player Joe Ingles and former NBA star Andrew Bogut both congratulating Jackson.
The Women's Basketball World Cup starts on September 22nd. Australia is currently ranked 3rd in the world, trailing only Spain and the USA.
