"After the heart attack that our coach suffered a few weeks ago, Real Madrid has made several consultations with doctors and cardiology specialists, and all of them have expressed the obvious risk to his health that continuing as the squad's coach at this time entails," the club's official statement notes.

"The priority for the club is, first of all, the health of Pablo Laso out of respect and affection for him," Real Madrid write in their statement, also noting that the dismissal is purely due to the coach's medical condition.

Pablo Laso has been a head coach of Real since 2011. During his long tenure in the Spanish capital, he won the EuroLeague title twice in 2015 and 2018 and navigated the squad to six Spanish league trophies, six Spanish Cups, and six Spanish Super Cups.

The statement is finished with an interesting phrase: "Real Madrid can understand that this decision has made our coach sad, but nothing, not even Real Madrid, is above anyone's health, and in this case, it is a risk that this institution cannot avoid."

Assistant coach Chus Mateo is expected to continue as the club's head coach.
