NBA's BOG plans on making play-in tournament permanent, changing take-foul penalty / News - Basketnews.com
The NBA Board of Governors is expected on Tuesday to put a permanent stamp on the play-in tournament, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
In this way, the tournament will become a regular part of future league seasons. The play-in had been voted on a year-to-year basis in past two seasons, but support exists to turn it into annual element of NBA structure.
It allows the ninth and tenth seed in each conference vie for a spot in the NBA playoffs. When playoff time comes, the seventh seed will play the eight seed, in which the winner of that game will secure a spot in the playoffs, while the loser plays the winner of a game between the ninth and tenth seeds to lock the final playoff spot.
Chris Haynes of Yahoo sports says another important decision by the NBA Board of Governors will revolve around the penalization of the NBA transition "take foul" during games, starting with the 2022-23 season.
The NBA's Competition Committee is moving forward with a proposal to grant the team on offense with one free throw and possession of the ball if the team on defense employs the take foul, which was overly used by teams on defense to eliminate fast-break opportunities in which the defending team was at a disadvantage.
After the foul, the offensive team was previously given the ball out of bounds. In Europe, such fouls are being called as unsportsmanlike, according to FIBA rules.
