"Now, how can she feel like America has her back?" James said on his talk show, "The Shop: Uninterrupted".
"I would be feeling like, 'Do I even want to go back to America?'" added James.
James tweeted on Tuesday that his comments were not meant to be disrespectful.
The Lakers' star commented on how Griner must have been feeling.
"Probably feeling emotionally along with so many other emotions, thoughts, etc inside that cage she's been in for over 100+ days!" wrote James.
Last week, Griner pleaded guilty to drug possession and will appear in court again this Thursday.
Griner was arrested at Moscow airport in February after the Russian Federal Customs Service allegedly found vape pen cartridges containing hashish oil in Grinner's bag.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver said that NBA and WNBA are doing everything they can to bring Griner back to the United States.
"I'm accepting that the administration is doing everything they can right now," Silver said.
"There are some seriously complex geopolitical issues here," added Silver.
