When asked what he thought of the new Beal's deal, Barkley's initial reaction was just one word.
"Wow," Barkley said on a recent episode of the Washington Football Talk Podcast.
"Let me tell you something. My mom, I love my mom, she passed away a few years ago," continued Barkley.
"Every time I see one of those contracts, I want to drive to the graveyard and just snatch her up and say, ‘Why couldn’t you just wait a couple more years to have me?! Just a couple more years!'", jokingly said, Barkley.
Then Barkley explained his thoughts more seriously
"You know what? Bless these young guys," Barkely said.
"Bradley Beal’s a hell of a player. I don’t ever want to be the old 'Get off my lawn' guy, added Barkley.
Barkley then gave examples of all-time greats that played before him and made less money.
"I made more money than Bill Russell, he’s a much better player than me. I made more money than Kareem [Abdul-Jabbar], he’s a much, much better player than me," Barkley explained.
"Hey, God bless them. It's good work if you can get it," Barkley concluded.
In addition to his new contract extension, Beal is the only current player in the NBA to have a no-trade clause.
Beal has spent his entire 10-year career with the Wizards, which drafted him with the 3rd overall pick in the 2012 draft.
Last season the 1.91-meter tall guard averaged 23.2 points, 6.6 assists, and 4.7 rebounds per game.
However, the 3-time NBA All-Star only played in 40 games this past season as he had season-ending surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left wrist in February.
