Griner's lawyer, Maria Blagovolina, provided documents in an effort to release the player in the latest court hearing.

Griner, who is accused of drug smuggling, presented in court the data of a medical examination, according to which, due to chronic pain, the doctor gave her permission from the Arizona Ministry of Health to use cannabis, RIA Novosti reports.

Greiner was undergoing a medical examination this year due to complaints of chronic and debilitating pain. In addition, the tests that she passed as part of an anti-doping check were attached - no banned substances were detected.

The next meeting will take place on July 26.

Maxim Ryabkov, the director of UMMC Yekaterinburg, the club Griner played for in Russia, also revealed that the contract with the player has not yet been terminated.

Together with Ryabkov, the captain of the club, Elena Belyakova, spoke about Griner's sporting achievements, in particular about how she contributed to the development of Russian basketball.

"I will only say that during the hearings yesterday and today it became clear that both in the United States and here, in Russia, where Ms. Griner has been playing basketball for a Russian club for seven years, she enjoys great respect and recognition not only for her professional achievements but also for her character and decency," Elizabeth Rood, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow commented about the trial.

In February, an inspection of hand luggage revealed that the WNBA star had vapes with a liquid with hashish oil. A criminal case was opened on the smuggling of drugs, and Griner was subsequently arrested and faces from 5 to 10 years in prison.
