WNBA reportedly verbally bans American players from playing in Russia / News - Basketnews.com
As the Brittney Griner trial in Russia continues, the WNBA has reportedly taken action so that it may not happen again.
According to Timur Ganeev from Russian outlet Sport-Express, the league has verbally banned its American players from playing in Russian teams. It is currently an unspoken rule, the journalist reports, but the players are expected to adhere to it.
The WNBA season lasts only several months, and many top players of the league go on to play in Europe throughout the rest of the year, many of them in Russia.
The premiere stars of the league make up to $500,000 in the WNBA. Playing in Russia, those same players doubled or even tripled their salaries in the remaining months of the entire season.
In February, an inspection of hand luggage revealed that the WNBA star had vapes with a liquid with hashish oil. A criminal case was opened on the smuggling of drugs, and Griner was subsequently arrested and faces from 5 to 10 years in prison.
On Friday, Griner's lawyer, Maria Blagovolina, provided documents in an effort to release the player where she provided proof about permission from the Arizona Ministry of Health to use cannabis as a means of combatting chronic pain.
