In the midst of a disagreement among the EuroLeague Board Members, a report has surfaced about the financial side of the tournament.

According to the Spanish sports industry research website 2Playbook and its journalist Alvaro Carretero, the EuroLeague business has tripled since the 2014-15 season, and the latest projections show that it can reach 100 million euros in turnover next year.

The forecast for 2022-23 is that the organization's income will grow another 15% year-on-year and thus reach the touted figure, the website reports.

Following a joint venture with IMG in 2016, the league introduced a semi-closed competition format. The deal offered greater stability for each of the clubs that have a guaranteed license in the tournament.

The agreement with IMG was signed for ten years and always guarantees a minimum distribution even if the economic objectives are not met.

Following recent changes in the procedure during the pandemic, a bigger percentage of the income is now given to the clubs just for participating in the tournament.

As a result, the so-called market pool, which adds up all audiovisual agreements in the clubs' markets, now accounts for 80% of the total distributions for the clubs, with only 20% given by sporting merit.

According to the data accessed by 2Playbook, EuroLeague viewership for full matches has risen by 75% between the 2014-15 and 2021-22 seasons. Currently, Lithuania is the only country where the competition can be viewed on a free national broadcaster.

The annual report prepared by Nielsen shows that since the 2015-16 season, interest in the league has grown by 30%, a measure that is seen as the most important in EuroLeague offices.

According to 2Playbook, audiences in France, Germany, Russia, Italy, and the United Kingdom have grown by 120% since 2018-2019, while the audience in the so-called core markets (Spain, Turkey, Greece, Israel, and the Balkans) has increased by 56%.
