Real Madrid announced to have reached an agreement with forward Mario Hezonja for the next two seasons.

In 2021 the Croatian player made his return to Europe, signing with Panathinaikos OPAP Athens.

This past season, the 27-year-old averaged 14.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 14.2 PIR over 25 EuroLeague games for UNICS Kazan.

On March 22, Russian clubs were officially excluded from the 2021-22 EuroLeague season due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Hezonja arrived at FC Barcelona at the age of 17 and became one of their leaders from the 2012 season. In 2015 the forward left for the NBA and was selected with the number 5 overall pick in the NBA Draft.

In the NBA the 2.03-meters tall forward played for the Orlando Magic, the New York Knicks, and the Portland Trail Blazers before returning to Europe.
