Brisbane Bullets eye Aron Baynes after unsuccessful NBA tryout / News - Basketnews.com
Former NBA big man Aron Baynes suffered a horrific injury last summer. Now, he's trying to make his comeback to professional basketball.
According to Emiliano Carchia from Sportando, the Australian Basketball League's (NBL) team Brisbane Bullets are interested in signing the Australian player for the upcoming season.
Journalist Matt Logue from News Corp Australia was first to report it way back in February while Baynes was still in his rehabilitation process. According to Logue, the Bullets reached out to the player about the possibility of suiting up for the club for next year.
The team has a multi-year contract ready, Logue reports, if Baynes decides to no longer pursue the NBA career.
Baynes held multiple workouts for NBA Summer League teams this month. It seems that the effort did not materialize and the player might need to look to continue his career elsewhere.
"He's trying to get the NBA gig. If that doesn't work out, I know there are a number of teams that are looking for his services," Sydney Kings CEO Chris Pongrass said several weeks ago.
Multiple experts in Australia believe a stint in the NBL would be a good way for Baynes to prepare his body for one last chance in the NBA.
Baynes fell and was knocked unconscious when he went to the bathroom between the third and fourth quarters in a Tokyo Olympics group stage match against Italy. The next thing he knew, he couldn't walk as both legs were completely numb. He had lost his ability to walk.
He was then rushed to a local hospital, where scans showed internal bleeding that was putting pressure on the player's spine. He would then spend several months in hospitals, trying to learn to walk again.
Baynes eventually finished his rehab and is now ready to be a professional basketball player again.
