Michael Jordan reacts to the passing of Bill Russell / News - Basketnews.com
The passing of the NBA and Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell shook the basketball world and one of the greatest players of all time, Michael Jordan, also joined among many others to express his condolences.
"Bill Russell was a pioneer as a player, as a champion, as the NBA's first black head coach and as an activist," Jordan said in a statement published by the Charlotte Hornets. "He paved the way and set an example for every black player who came into the league after him, including me. The world has lost a legend. My condolences to his family and may he rest in peace."
Russell had the most remarkable career of any player in the history of team sports. He played in the NBA from 1956 to 1969, winning 11 titles with the Boston Celtics, which is more than any player ever in the sport.
Russell was awarded the US highest civilian honor when the Medal of Freedom, by former President Barack Obama in 2011, was awarded to him. And in 2017, the NBA awarded him with its Lifetime Achievement Award. In addition, the NBA Finals MVP award is named after Russell.
Russell also won the championship title twice as a coach since he played the role of player-coach for the last two seasons of his career.
