SlamBall to make return after 15 years break / News - Basketnews.com
After 14 years of silence, SlamBall will make its return in the summer of 2023, Mason Gordon, the founder of SlamBall, announced.
"There have been many people clamoring for SlamBall to come back," Gordon told TMZ Sports. "There has been #BringBackSlamBall media, viewed over 200 million times in the last 12 months. So, I'm ready to announce next summer, 2023, SlamBall is coming back, live!"
For those who don't know, SlamBall is a form of basketball played with four trampolines in front of each net and boards around the court edge. Slamball is based on basketball, it is a contact sport, with blocks, collisions, and rough physical play a part of the game, similar to elements of American football and ice hockey.
The inaugural season of SlamBall was in 2002. However, at first, SlamBall lasted for only two seasons. In 2008, the league made a full return, having their first season played since 2003. Unfortunately, the new season would be the last for SlamBall. The league returned in 2018, but they'd go on to host tournaments and events instead of actual full seasons.
Gordon said there were many opportunities to bring the game back over the years, but he didn't want to do it until all the conditions were perfect for making a return.
"We've gotten opportunities pretty much every couple of months. There will be an opportunity to bring SlamBallback in some form," Gordon told TMZ Sports. "My partners and I have always looked at it and said, 'We're not gonna come back until the market conditions are like really optimal,' and the alternate sports marketplace is on fire."
As Gordon notes, now it's a good time to make a return, especially since many people can't find the time or pay attention to the full NBA game, which lasts from 2.5 to 3 hours.
"SlamBall just kind of fits the bill. They're 20-minute games. Television half hours. People obviously have really gravitated to the action, and it's this incredible mash-up between basketball, football, hockey, a little bit of gymnastics, a little bit of video games, that's just SlamBall," Gordon concluded.
