Sue Bird says her regular-season goodbye to a record crowd in Seattle / News - Basketnews.com
Sue Bird has played her last regular season game in Seattle. It was a special night both for the legendary guard and the Seattle Storm.
One of the most decorated woman basketball players of all time, Bird has won the WNBA four times, she's a 5-time Olympic champion, 5-time EuroLeague winner, record-breaking 13-time WNBA All-Star, 4-time World Champion, and a 2-time NCAA winner.
The evening did not go as planned, though, as Storm lost 81-89 against the Las Vegas Aces. However, it did not change Bird's outlook.
"I'm not going to lie, it kind of sucks to lose my last game here," Bird said after the game on the microphone in front of 18,100 fans in Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. "But it's OK, I lost my first game here too."
"This was a big night for Sue. I'm so glad that she and [Sylvia Fowles] are both getting their flowers," Aces leader A'Ja Wilson told post-game. "The things that Sue has done with this franchise are amazing. I'm honored to be her teammate on the Olympic team, especially getting her fifth [gold medal] alongside her. This is a big night for her. I'm sure it's going to continue to be a big night for her and it's all love for sure."
Bird herself started the game at point guard, finishing the match with 9 points on 4-of-9 shooting, grabbing 4 rebounds and dishing out 6 assists along the way.
LeBron James congratulated the basketball legend as well. "Seattle was rockin' today for Sue Bird last home game! I may have to make a trip up there before summer's out and get a run in," the superstar tweeted.
It was not the last Sue Bird's game at home but her final regular-season match. Seattle Storm are currently 4th in the WNBA with 20 wins and 13 losses and have already clinched a playoff berth.
