Maccabi Tel Aviv center Alex Poythress officially obtained his Ivory Coast passport and is set to help his new team in the 2023 FIBA World Cup qualifiers, sources tell BasketNews.

A 28-year-old American joins the Ivory Coast national team in Tunisia for the training camp.

Ivory Coast went 6-0 in the group stage and will start the 2nd round from the top position.

The two top teams in two groups, along with the best third-placed team, will qualify for the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

With six games to play, Ivory Coast (4-0) is followed by Cape Verde (3-1), Angola (2-2), Nigeria (2-2), Uganda (1-3), and Guinea (0-4).

In the upcoming FIBA window, which Ivory Coast will host, Poythress will help his new team in three games vs. Nigeria (August 26), Uganda (August 27), and Cape Verde (August 28).

Last EuroLeague season, Poythress averaged 7.7 points (2FG: 64%), 4.2 rebounds, and 0.6 blocks in 20 minutes.

The 2.06-meter tall big man has agreed to a two-year deal with Maccabi this summer.

Cotonou passport holders are allowed not to occupy the extra space of a foreign player on team rosters in some European leagues, including the Spanish Liga Endesa.
