Position:SF, SGAge:33Height:200 cmWeight:98 kgBirth place:CroatiaProfileNewsStatisticsIndeed, a long wait for all basketball stars to prove their worth on the continental FIBA court.
That's one of the main reasons we'll have an opportunity to watch a very strong championship with many NBA and EuroLeague talent gracing the floor in four European countries.
EuroBasket 2022 reminisces arguably the strongest European competition in the previous decade (EuroBasket 2011) when such top-level players as Juan Carlos Navarro, Andrei Kirilenko, Mirza Teletovic, Tony Parker, Boris Diaw, Hidayet Turkoglu, Dirk Nowitzki, Luol Deng, Bo McCalebb, Gasol brothers, and many other basketball aces competed for a spot in 2012 London Olympics.
Even though no tickets to other international competitions are given this Autumn due to the change in the FIBA system, plenty of basketball masters will fire up the basketball lovers in the stands and in front of TV screens.
Ahead of EuroBasket 2022, BasketNews presents the list of brightest stars who will participate in the long-awaited competition for the Old Continent trophy.
Vasilije Micic| Serbia | Guard
Micic proved his huge worth in Europe once again and was close to making the leap to the NBA.
The 28-year-old playmaker posted EuroLeague's best average in points (18.2) last season, leading Anadolu Efes Istanbul to its third consecutive Final Four and a back-to-back EuroLeague title.
Vasilije Micic did it all, ranking sixth in assists (4.6), seventh in PIR (17.5), and fifth in three-pointers made (2.2).
The All-EuroLeague Second Team member forms one of the greatest EuroLeague backcourts ever, together with Turkey's star guard Shane Larkin.
"They'll definitely go in the history of the EuroLeague probably as the most powerful duo of all time," a five-year NBA veteranJames Anderson told BasketNews.
With the Serbian national team, Micic appeared in two EuroBaskets in 2013 and 2017. He did not move mountains then, collecting 4.1 and 3.6 EFF accordingly. However, his role will be huge this time.
Long-time Serbian NT captain Milos Teodosic was cut at the start of the preparation cycle, which means only one thing – the reigning EuroLeague Final Four MVP, Vasilije Micic, remains as the main go-to guy in the perimeter line and is set to combine a deadly combo with the NBA regular-season MVP, Nikola Jokic.
Interestingly enough, Jokic wanted to see his fellow countryman in Denver Nuggets. Still, the opportunity in the NBA did not come once again, and Micic stayed in Europe for another season.
Lauri Markkanen | Finland | Forward
After spending his first 4 seasons in Chicago, the 25-year-old Markkanen completed his first one with the Cleveland Cavaliers, averaging 14.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.3 assists over 61 games.
His presence on the court helped the ambitious Cavaliers team on the offensive end in particular with some good floor spacing, off-screen driving, and shooting ability. Markkanen shot the ball 35.8 percent from downtown on 6.2 attempts per game.
When Markkanen, Evan Mobley, and Darius Garland were all available to play, the Cavs finished with a record of 19-10. When just one of them was injured, they dropped below .500.
Markkanen's last time with the national team came two months ago when he played in FIBA World Cup 2023 European Qualifiers.
He was unstoppable at that time, posting 20.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 25.5 EFF over two victorious efforts against Sweden and Croatia. He simply drowned the latter squad with a game-winning jumper.
According to the player himself, now he is an even better athlete and Finnish supporters will see an updated version of 'Markkanen 2.0'.
"I'm a smarter player today. The rookie's sloppiness is gone, hopefully," he laughed while talking to the Finnish Basketball Federation. "I have already spent five years in the NBA. I am in a pretty nice situation that I already know who I am as a basketball player, but I also know that I still have room for improvement at this age."
He not only showed his improvement in the aftermentioned FIBA window but also in the friendly match for EuroBasket 2022 against Ukraine. Markkanen dropped a career-high 42 points in a 97-94 overtime win.
It highlights that Markkanen is a crucial piece to the Finnish puzzle, and he elevates the team to the next level.
Franz Wagner | Germany | Forward
Magic forward Franz Wagner, the eighth overall selection in 2021, was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team after an impressive first-year campaign. He made NBA history, becoming the first German player to receive such recognition.
Along with almost playing in every contest – his 79 games played were the most among any first-year player this season – Wagner scored the most points (1,197), grabbed the fifth most rebounds (356), dished out the sixth most assists (231), and tallied the fifth most steals (68) among all rookies.
His 17 20-plus-point performances were the fourth most by a Magic rookie all-time – trailing only Shaquille O'Neal (60), Penny Hardaway (29), and Dennis Scott (24).
"Franz had a tremendous rookie season," Magic President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman said. "I feel that he learned what eighty-two games are about. He came within a whisker of playing all eighty-two, which would have been a hell of an accomplishment. But the fact that he did play as many as he did, I think is remarkable in today's NBA for a rookie."
With his older brother Moritz Wagner missing EuroBasket 2022 due to an ankle injury, the 20-year-old Franz becomes an even more important piece for his country.
He is set to reduce the workload of Dennis Schroder or even supersede him as the main German NT's scoring threat.
Franz Wagner just made his senior debut with Germany's jersey in FIBA World Cup European Qualifiers, posting 16.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.0 steal, 1.0 block, and 17.5 EFF over two victorious efforts.
Dennis Schroder | Germany | Guard
The brightest Germany's national team star, Dennis Schroder, will suit up for his country for the second time in two months when he took part in FIBA World Cup European Qualifiers earlier.
As you would expect, he was a true team leader, recording 26.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists, and 25.0 EFF in two games.
He exploded against Poland in a way WC European Qualifiers history had never witnessed, setting a new scoring record with 38 points (it was recently improved by Giannis Antetokounmpo).
Schroder is willingly helping his country in every major tournament, as he didn't miss a single one since EuroBasket 2015. His scoring capabilities broke out at EuroBasket 2017 when Schroder finished second with 23.7 points per game.
The 28-year-old guard is coming off a season with the Boston Celtics and Houston Rockets, where he played 64 games in total, averaging 13.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 4.6 assists.
Nine-season NBA veteran will have the chance of playing in front of a home crowd in the group stage of Cologne and potentially playoffs phase in Berlin.
"It's a new opportunity to make basketball even bigger in Germany. Everyone is already fired up," Schroder said back in May.
Cedi Osman | Turkey | Forward
Osman is set to lead an exciting Turkey roster this Autumn as the 27-year-old Cleveland Cavaliers forward can do a little bit of everything on the court, and it definitely sets him apart in the Turkish squad.
Five-season Cavs player gave Cleveland a notable lift off the bench last season, averaging 10.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 2.0 assists while shooting 35.7 percent from the 3-point zone.
Osman has always been an exemplary teammate, and when he gets going, it can ignite the whole group. It will be interesting to see him on the floor with other Turkish stars such as Shane Larkin, Alperen Sengun, Furkan Korkmaz, and Sertac Sanli.
We could already see a glimpse of that in the friendly games where Osman was one of the leading figures. For example, he poured in 24 points against Dragic and Doncic-led Slovenia.
What is more, Osman wants to help his country whenever he can do it. Since 2014, Osman has been present in all international FIBA events that Turkey was a part of.
Jusuf Nurkic | Bosnia | Center
'The Bosnian Beast' and the whole Bosnia and Herzegovina national team were in real danger of missing EuroBasket 2022 due to the lack of funding.
"No matter how much we don't want all this circus not to disturb us, I can't say that it doesn't disturb us. I think this is shameful," Nurkic commented on the situation.
Recently, Bosnia's basketball federation announced that all issues are resolved, and the national team will receive the required funds to participate both in the 2023 World Cup European Qualifiers and EuroBasket 2022.
With Nurkic on the roster, the 3.3 million basketball nation is a whole different animal, but their group is very demanding, to say the least. Four counties in the Top 11 FIBA ranking – France (4th), Slovenia (5th), Lithuania (8th), and hosts Germany (11th) – await Bosnia in the group phase.
It will be even more difficult to advance to the next stage, as Jusuf Nurkic hasn't played an official game since February 16. He sat out the remaining NBA season with left foot plantar fasciitis.
Until then, Nurkic proved his nickname of Bosnian Beast, averaging a double-double with 15.0 points and 11.1 rebounds throughout 56 games (all starts).
Portland Trail Blazers big man last suited up for the national team during the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 European Qualifiers.
Credit FIBAEvan Fournier | France | Guard
Fournier goes to a different level with the national team and is set for a leading role once again this September, alongside good friend Rudy Gobert.
The 29-year-old swingman made the All-Tournament Team at the World Cup in 2019 and was fourth in scoring (18.7 PTS) among players who competed in all six duels the last summer at Tokyo Olympics.
After a standout individual performance and capturing a silver medal in Japan, Fournier has spoken on numerous occasions about wanting France to build up their own dynasty on the international level and end a personal wait for a gold medal.
"We have to promote our sports culture, stop being afraid of being ambitious. I want this to change, and our team can do it. We are not afraid of anyone. My vision is to become as dominant as Spain has been in the last 15 years," Fournier told L'Equipe last September.
"Tokyo is just our first final. I want to win EuroBasket 2022. This is not the time to stop. We have the opportunity to build a dynasty. This team must grow every summer, relive the same emotions, and reactivate what has made our success in Tokyo possible: putting aside the ego, fighting for each other, having this winning mentality," added the French scoring machine.
Fournier is coming off a successful NBA season stats-wise with the New York Knicks, averaging 14.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists over 80 matches.
Evan Fournier seems more than ready to lead Les Bleus to what they hope will be the first title after the 2013 triumph.
Goran Dragic | Slovenia | Guard
Dragic missed the most prestigious basketball event in Tokyo Olympics last summer, and it seemed impossible to see him playing again for the Slovenian national team.
However, the team captain decided to participate in the WC European Qualifiers matches in June and the start of July, which paved the way for his last dance in EuroBasket 2022.
"A lot of reasons to be back. First of all, Rasho Nesterovic [General Secretary of the Slovenian Basketball Federation]. He is like family to me. He is the godfather of my daughter.
And, of course, my brother Luka [Doncic]. I have to say they were on my ass, insisting I needed to come back," Dragic revealed why he is back to hunt another trophy.
The 36-year-old veteran guard represented the Slovenian jersey in 2017 when he guided his country to the first-ever EuroBasket gold. He scored 35 points in the final, which was the most points scored in the gold-medal game since Pau Gasol dropped 36 in the final of 2003.
Following his performance, Dragic was given the MVP award of the tournament after averaging 22.6 points per game over 9 duels.
As of now, Dragic has passed his torch to Luka Doncic and returns to the team as a second offensive option.
"I will certainly not play 36 minutes per game. I used to be Batman, now I'll be Robin," Dragic shared an analogy.
Playing in his 14th NBA season in 2021-22, Dragic posted 7.5 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 4.1 assists across 21 contests for the Toronto Raptors and Brooklyn Nets.
The former NBA All-Star and league's Most Improved Player in 2014 has career averages of 13.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 4.8 assists over 888 games (530 starts) with the Phoenix Suns, Miami Heat, Houston Rockets, Raptors, and Nets.
Bojan Bogdanovic | Croatia | Forward
Croatia suffered another fiasco this summer by not qualifying for FIBA World Cup 2023.
But Croatia is set for a new beginning. Bojan Bogdanovic is a weapon to rely on for finally bringing success to the basketball nation.
The 33-year-old swingman had a major role in the Utah Jazz, which even increased in the most important stretch of the last season when Joe Ingles sustained a season-ending ACL tear. The 8-season NBA veteran registered 18.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 69 matches.
He also broke the Utah Jazz single-game record for 3-pointers made during Utah's match against the Oklahoma City Thunder on March 6.
Bogdanovic connected on 11 shots from downtown. He became the first player in NBA history to make 11+ threes in a game without making a 2-pointer, via StatMuse.
Bogdanovic hopes to bounce back after a debacle in WC Qualifiers. Still, he needs to deliver his A-game to empower star-studded Croatia with the likes of Mario Hezonja, Dario Saric, Ivica Zubac, Krunoslav Simon, and the national team's newbie Jaleen Smith.
Jonas Valanciunas | Lithuania | Center
Valanciunas has thrived since being traded to New Orleans Pelicans in the summer of 2021.
Valanciunas was one of the key players earning the Pelicans their first NBA playoffs appearance since the 2017-18 season. He averaged 17.8 points, 11.4 rebounds, and 2.6 assists over 74 regular-season matches.
His best game came against the Los Angeles Clippers when JV embraced his inner Dirk Nowitzki in Crypto.com Arena, hitting one long-range shot after another.
The best Lithuanian basketball player of the year went 7-of-7 from the 3-point zone in the first half and finished the contest with a career-high 39 points.
"The guys were calling him Dirk Valanciunas," said Pelicans' coach Willie Green after the shooting fest.
The experienced big man enjoyed a successful junior career with the Lithuanian NT and has amassed over a decade of service with the senior squad. Valanciunas has two silver medals to his name at EuroBasket, with successive runners-up finishes in 2013 and 2015.
Jonas Valanciunas was the main Lithuanian national team force in the 2020 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Kaunas, where he recorded 16.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 23.0 EFF.
Domantas Sabonis | Lithuania | Forward/Center
"He's a monster; he's like an ox," De'Aaron Fox described Sabonis after one of his first games with the Sacramento Kings jersey.
Ahead of the trade deadline, the NBA world was shaken up by the two-time All-Star switching Conferences, moving from the Indiana Pacers to the Sacramento Kings.
New Kings head coach, Mike Brown, appears to like what he found in Sacramento, placing Sabonis and Fox's duo among the three best two-man games in the league.
"As a tandem in the pick and roll, they are very, very good. Probably a top-three combination in the league right now, so that's a gift. With Fox's speed and Sabonis' ability to pass, it just gives you different ways to play the game of basketball," Brown said.
Sabonis, 26, has averaged 18.9 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 5.8 assists in 15 starts with the Kings since they acquired him in a February 8 trade with the Indiana Pacers.
Sabonis marked last season with a performance Lithuania will never forget. He scored a career-high 42 points while still playing for the Pacers and not only improved his personal best in scoring but also surpassed Linas Kleiza's achievement and became the Lithuanian scoring record holder in the NBA.
The Kings have missed the playoffs for 16 consecutive seasons. Their fans believe Sabonis is the right guy to go with to end the longest drought in the history of the NBA.
Similarly, Lithuanian supporters expect that Sabonis and Valanciunas' duo will help interrupt a 7-year period without any medal on the international basketball stage.
Sabonis was part of the Lithuania side that finished as runners-up at EuroBasket in 2015, but he is yet to have a dominant tournament with the Lithuanian NT. Things might change soon.
Rudy Gobert | France | Center
The 30-year-old 'Stifle Tower' has won four medals with the senior men's national team, including silver at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics last summer, and brings an imposing presence as one of the elite rim protectors in the world of basketball.
"It was important that everything was clear in my head before I committed [for EuroBasket 2022]. The fact that Evan [Fournier] is there is a factor, I love going to war with him," Gobert said.
With Fournier on board, Gobert's inclusion into Europe's flagship event gives Les Bleus another vital leader, especially as Nicolas Batum and Nando De Colo have decided to skip the tournament.
"Rudy has become a major element of the team over the years. The fact that he is there with Evan guarantees continuity in the work we do in the long term with this team," French NT coach Vincent Collet told L'Equipe.
"We started building something in China at the World Cup [2019]," Gobert continued. That and the Olympics are some of the best memories of my career. It was incredibly rewarding."
"It would have bothered me not to be able to continue this summer with this group. We are only at the beginning, and in the next few years, we want to make even more history, especially during this EuroBasket," added Gobert.
French star's NBA career made a sharp turn this offseason as the Minnesota Timberwolves threw everything on the table to acquire a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a three-time NBA All-Star.
Timberwolves got the Frenchman from the Utah Jazz via the trade in exchange for guards Patrick Beverley, Malik Beasley, Leandro Bolmaro, and forward Jarred Vanderbilt, along with the draft rights to center Walker Kessler and Minnesota's 2023, 2025, 2027, and 2029 first-round picks and a 2026 first-round pick swap.
Rudy Gobert has appeared in 611 regular-season games (519 starts) in his entire 9-year NBA career with the Utah Jazz, averaging 12.4 points on 65.3% shooting, 11.7 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game.
The 2.16-meter (7 ft 1 in) center played in 66 matches (all starts) last season, registering 15.6 points on a career-high 71.3% shooting, a career-best 14.7 rebounds (1st in the NBA), and 2.1 blocks per match.
Luka Doncic | Slovenia | Guard/Forward
The Slovenian wunderkind has already warmed up with a Slovenian jersey during official FIBA games this summer, playing in WC European Qualifiers against Croatia and Sweden.
Slovenia got two victories while Doncic activated the beast mode with no-look dishes, lobs for the alley-oop jams, NBA-range step-back threes, and unguardable fadeaway jumpers.
He sank Slovenia's opponents by amassing 52 points, 18 rebounds, and 16 assists over a two-game span.
Doncic starred on the biggest stage as a teenager at FIBA EuroBasket 2017. He helped Slovenia win a historic title alongside his co-partner in the backcourt line, Goran Dragic. The duo is back on track, and Luka is an even scarier version of himself.
"Luka in 2017 and today... Like day and night. At that time, he was just starting his career at the highest level. Today, we all know what his name means in the basketball world," Goran Dragic spoke about Slovenia's superstar.
"He was in the national team for the first time five years ago. We introduced it to him. Now he is the leader. I will follow him."
Doncic, 3-time All-Star and 3-time All-NBA First Team member, averaged 28.4 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 8.7 assists over 65 starts last season, finishing third in the league in scoring and fifth in assists.
Doncic-led Mavericks went to the Western Conference Finals, where they lost against the champions Golden State Warriors in a 5-game series.
Although Luka and the company could not repeat the golden Mavs era with Dirk Nowitzki in front, Doncic's numbers went through the roof in 15 post-season appearances.
His stat line almost marked an impressive double-double average, reaching 31.7 points, 9.8 rebounds, 6.4 assists, and 1.8 steals.
Giannis Antetokounmpo | Greece | Forward
The first one of a couple of two-time NBA MVPs on the list.
Giannis' popularity in Greece is immense, especially among the younger generation, who regularly watch NBA games. However, what he still lacks to consolidate his status is to be successful with the Greek NT.
Greece has been underperforming for years, even when Giannis was on board. His presence at the 2019 FIBA World Cup was a reminder that international basketball is a different beast than the NBA in terms of rules and freedom of movement on the floor.
The fact that Giannis did not resemble the NBA MVP that he was at the time provoked some nasty comments about him and his ability to adapt to a different brand of basketball.
Nevertheless, EuroBasket 2022 provides the platform to take over and propel Greece into medal contention. Giannis made clearly visible progress during a three-year period that allowed him to free his best capabilities in FIBA basketball under the guidance of Dimitris Itoudis.
The NBA champ (2021) unleashed in the first preparation cycle match against Spain when Giannis broke his personal scoring record for the Greek NT, dropping 31 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and dishing out 3 assists for 38 PIR in just over 20 minutes of play.
The player himself managed to imbue his performance with passion, celebrations, and all kinds of expressions demonstrating that he was greatly enjoying being back with Greece for the first time after the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
During the last NBA regular season, the six-time All-Star was second in scoring at 29.9 points and seventh in rebounding with an 11.6 per game average. He also registered 5.8 assists, 1.4 blocks, and 1.1 steals per match.
"The way Giannis works is like a battery pack," Jrue Holiday said about his Bucks teammate recently. "He just never stops coming at you. For somebody to see that night after night, it really sucks, so I enjoy it. I enjoy being on this side, I really do.
"He really should be like in Space Jam, he really should. It's some of the craziest stuff I've ever seen."
We will have an answer shortly if 'Space Jam' Giannis is a thing at EuroBasket 2022. The 'MVP, MVP' chants from local fans might sound well-deserved, but they will amount to nothing if Greece comes up short once again.
Nikola Jokic | Serbia | Center
Same as Giannis, the back-to-back NBA MVP last competed for Serbia at the 2019 World Cup, and his inclusion in EuroBasket puts the Balkan country in contention to take home the trophy.
At the 2019 FIBA WC, Serbia was dubbed as favorite to win the title but was eventually upset in the quarterfinals by Argentina. With wins over the United States and the Czech Republic, it finished in fifth place.
Jokic was the second-best player behind Bogdan Bogdanovic, averaging 11.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists over eight games while shooting 68.0% from the field.
The 27-year-old big man is yet to debut at Europe's flagship event, having missed out in 2017. Moreover, he will take on additional responsibility as Bogdanovic is unavailable due to his right knee surgery.
It's widely known that Serbians demand the highest prizes throughout international events. Jokic certainly had this in mind when responding to a question about the nation's hopes.
"We don't like sports and basketball, we like victories and medals," he said ahead of EuroBasket.
Last season, 'The Joker' became the 13th NBA player to win two MVP awards in a row. He averaged 27.1 points, 13.8 rebounds, 7.9 assists, and 1.5 steals for the Denver Nuggets.
Jokic led the NBA with 19 triple-doubles and became the first player in NBA history to record at least 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 500 assists in a season.
"I don't know what else you can say about Nikola at this point," Denver coach Michael Malone said. "He's consistently improved his game, consistently proven people wrong when they doubt him, and consistently the best player on the floor night in and night out."
The Nuggets drafted Jokic with the 41st pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. Since then, the Serbian superstar not only became the MVP twice but was also named to All-NBA First Team three times and played in four NBA All-Star games.
You know you are good when your fiercest rivals speak highly about you: "He's a monster, he's a great player," Joel Embiid said about Jokic.
With Nikola Jokic in the Serbian NT, it would be a luxurious failure not to win anything at EuroBasket 2022. Definitely, it's strictly business for the European power, particularly after their recent wobble in FIBA World Cup European Qualifiers.
