Cuban forward Howard Sant-Roos has become the latest addition to Casademont Zaragoza's roster this Saturday, on a one-year deal.
The 31-year-old player made his European debut with Czech side Nymburk in 2015, winning the local league twice and averaging 15.0 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game.
He won the EuroCup title with Darussafaka Teken Istanbul in 2018, before joining the ranks of AEK Athens where he stayed for 18 months. Sant-Roos made the leap to the EuroLeague with CSKA Moscow in January 2020. In the summer of that same year, he returned to Athens to play for Panathinaikos OPAP, where he stayed for two seasons.
The Cuban forward won Greek League, Greek Cup, and Greek Super Cup with Panathinaikos. He was also named the best Greek League defender in 2021.
Last season, Sant-Roos averaged 7.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 8.5 PIR per 31 EuroLeague games. In the Greek league, his numbers were 8.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.3 assists in 23 contests.
Although the two parts had renewed their vows for two more years last summer, the Greens made use of their opt-out clause and let the player go. Sant-Roos had been engaged in the process of issuing a Greek passport over the past couple of years, to no avail.
Casademont Zaragoza sports director, Toni Muedra, stressed that Sant-Roos "can play various positions".
"He can play 2, 3 or even help get the ball up, and in all positions he has defensive and athletic ability to be a solid player defensively, and offensively, above all, the ability to play with the ball. And that It's what we wanted for that last piece," he analyzed.
Despite him being Cuban and having played professionally in several countries, Sant-Roos had never played for a Spanish club. In fact, he had the chance to do so during the 2014-15 season, when Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz saw Davis Bertans getting injured.
Their plan was to sign Sant-Roos for the remainder of the season (May). However, the agreement for Cubans to acquire the Cotonou passport had not yet been signed and, therefore, his case was dismissed, as he would hold a non-EU position.
