The deal would make Barrett the youngest player in franchise history to earn a 100+ million contract at age 22.
The forward becomes the first Knicks draftee to reach a multi-year rookie contract extension since Charlie Ward in 1999, ESPN Stats & Information states.
Barrett had his best season so far last year, averaging 20 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3 assists for the team. He missed four games in February with an ankle injury, and six games in December due to being placed in Health and Safety Protocols before spraining his knee in the second-to-last game of the season.
Wojnarowski also writes that the Knicks franchise had a Monday deadline for dealing with the Utah Jazz for their guard Donovan Mitchell. Barrett was included in offered trade packages for the star but ultimately no deal was reached, and the team decided to renew the contract with one of its main players.
Only five players have managed to collect 3000 points, 1000 rebounds, and 200 three-pointers before their 22nd birthday. RJ Barrett is in this select company together with Kobe Bryant, Luka Doncic, Kevin Durant, and LeBron James.
