Germany forced 16 turnovers while allowing to score just 63 points en route to a win in a game before which Dirk Nowitzki's jersey was retired.

Inspired by Dirk Nowitzki's jersey retirement before the match, Germany locked down France on defense to earn its first win in EuroBasket 2022 76-63 (17-13, 21-18, 19-12, 19-20).

The Germans looked inspired during the evening while the French national team did not manage to create consistent offense. Thomas Heurtel struggled while only two French players scored more than 10 points.

Meanwhile, Niels Giffey reminded the crowd why he was a EuroLeague player. Currently a free agent, Giffey scored on multiple occasions playing back to the basket and finished the game second in scoring.

In large part, Germany dominated throughout the entire match. Although the first half ended with the home team leading by seven (38-31), it was the second half where their superiority showed.

France was able to come back and even take the lead in the third quarter after an 8-0 run (39-38) but the Germans answered with a 19-4 run on their own and were able to have a whopping 14-point lead after 30 minutes.

Although France tried to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter, all their efforts were denied.

Johannes Thiemann led the Germans with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Maodo Lo and Niels Giffey both added 13 points each.

Guerschon Yabusele was a one-man-band on the other side of the court, scoring 18 points, Only Rudy Gobert was able to surpass the 10-point mark with 11 in his account.

Before the EuroBasket 2022 game between Germany and France,Dirk Nowitzki's #14 jersey was retired in front of thousands of German fans in Cologne.
