Two players and a coach were ejected in the game, the teams had to battle in two overtimes as Georgia (1-2) overcame Turkey (2-1) 88-83 (19-25, 17-8, 17-16, 15-19, 7-7, 13-8) to capture its first win in EuroBasket 2022.

Although the game was already fierce, the battle intensified even more in the middle of the fourth quarter. With Georgia leading by 3 (62-59), Duda Sanadze fouled Furkan Korkmaz while he attempted a driving layup. After the episode, Sanadze passed by Korkmaz while saying something to him directly.

The Turkish forward immediately retaliated and the two players went into a scuffle. Both Korkmaz and Sanadze received technical fouls as it was happening. After additional review, both players were awarded disqualifying fouls and had to leave the court.

During the episode, fans from the arena started throwing various things on the court. Everything took close to 10 minutes to settle down.

After the incident, neither of the teams scored from the field for two minutes. However, Sandro Mamukelashvili broke the silence with a fadeaway jumper from inside the paint, and the game was once again tied (66-66).

With 34 seconds to go, Turkey had a chance to seal the game with a successful possession. After a Shane Larkin drive, the Anadolu Efes Istanbul guard dished out a pass to Alperen Sengun who finished the possession with a confident dunk to give Turkey a two-point lead (68-66).

However, Georgia did not back down as Sandro Mamukelashvili made a tough layup with just two seconds to go. Turkey's last attempt was not successful and the teams had to go to overtime.

Sengun had a chance to ice the game with under two minutes remaining in the overtime but missed both of his free throws. On the other side of the court, Thaddus McFadden made a tough fadeaway three-pointer first, then converted an absurd triple from way downtown from the backboard to give Georgia a narrow one-point lead (76-75).

Alperen Sengun once again had a chance to give Turkey but made only the second free throw, and the teams were tied once again (76-76). Cedi Osman missed a wide-open three-pointer, and second overtime followed.

Sandro Mamukelashvili had scored just 7 points in three quarters and had 13 after the fourth quarter. However, the Milwaukee Bucks forward remember who he can be. A putback dunk followed by a tough driving layup coupled with a key defensive rebound.

Things got even more heated then. Cedi Osman committed an unsportsmanlike foul and Turkey's head coach Ergin Ataman went nuclear. The coach received two quick technicals and got ejected from the game.

McFadden made a couple of ensuing free throws and sealed the game.

The game did not end here, though. According to multiple accounts, Turkey has decided to file an official protest.

The Turkish national team points to an episode after the Korkmaz-Sanadze scuffle. When the initial Sanadze foul was called, the game clock showed 4:46. However, when the free throws for the shooting foul were shot, the game clock was already at 4:26.

The reborn Mamukelashvili was the top scorer on the Georgian team. He finished the game with 20 points on 8-for-17 shooting while also recording a double-double with 12 rebounds. First overtime hero McFadden recorded 17 points but made just 4 three-pointers out of 19.

Alperen Sengun led the Turkish team with 21 points and 9 rebounds on 10-for-14 shooting but made only one free throw out of four.

Turkey: Alperen Sengun 21 (10/13 2PT, 1/4 FT, 9 REB), Cedi Osman 13 (3/9 2PT, 2/10 3PT, 6 REB), Melih Mahmutoglu 11 (1/5 3PT).

Georgia: Sandro Mamukelashvili 20 (6/9 2PT, 2/8 3PT, 12 REB), Thaddus McFadden 17 (4/19 3PT, 6 AST), Giorgi Shermadini 15 (7/8 2PT, 7 REB), Rati Andronikashvili 15 (7/11 2PT), Duda Sanadze 13 (4/7 2PT, 1/4 3PT, 8 REB).
