NBA in-season tournament structure is slowly taking shape, and it could start as soon as the 2023/24 season.

According to Shams Charania from The Athletic, the competition would run through November with eight teams advancing to a single-elimination round in December, while the other 22 league teams would continue the regular season.

The teams would not play more than the current 82 games as all matchups of the tournament would be included in the regular-season schedule with the exception of the two teams in the final, who would play an additional 83rd game of the year to decide the winner.

The league has noticed the success of the play-in tournament and wants to expand the concept to attract fans during the regular season when the viewership is usually lower. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has noted before that the players have become more welcoming to the idea recently due to the positive reception of the play-in tournament.

Additionally, the salary cap for the 2023/24 season is projected to be $134 million, which is $10.4 million higher than that of the upcoming season. The luxury tax level is projected to be $162 million. Both the $134 million and the $162 million figures are $1 million higher than previously projected.
