Scoring spree like no other: EuroBasket 2022 is shattering record books / News - Basketnews.com
This year, Germany leads the competition in scoring (93.6 ppg), but there are four other teams that average over 90 points per game: Greece (92.3), Serbia (92.0), Slovenia (92.0), and Spain (90.4). That's unprecedented in EuroBasket history.
Credit: FIBA Credit FIBAWhen the buzzer sounded, and both teams headed to the locker rooms, it was Greece 61, Germany 57. That could have been your typical EuroBasket result some ten years ago, except that this time it was the score at halftime.
The game, EuroBasket quarterfinal, not some regular game, finished 107-96 in favor of Germany. It was the second (of two so far) quarterfinal game where the winning team scored at least 100 points.
It has been a story of EuroBasket 2022 so far. Free-flowing, high-scoring games everywhere.
Take Germany, for example. The game against Greece was the third for them in this year's competition, where they reached triple-digit numbers in scoring. In the previous 35 years, they only had two such games.
Greece conceded 100+ points for the first time since 2001. That's 74 games ago.
This year, Germany leads the competition in scoring (93.6 ppg), but there are four other teams that average over 90 points per game: Greece (92.3), Serbia (92.0), Slovenia (92.0), and Spain (90.4).
There were 2 teams averaging over 90 ppg in 2017 (Slovenia and Latvia) and 0 teams between 2005 and 2015.
The highest scoring team in EuroBasket 2013, Spain, averaged 78.3 points per game. That would be good enough only for 17th place this year.
"There are some really good players," Gordon Herbert, German national team coach, explained. "We have some extremely talented players, and I think people are starting to realize that."
Currently, four players are averaging more than 26 points per game, another extremely high number.
Giannis Antetokounmpo (29.3), Luka Doncic (28.0), Lauri Markkanen (27.9) and Aleksandr Vezenkov (26.8) are averaging more points than any other player since 2003. Dirk Nowitzki averaged 28.7 points in 2001, and it used to be the best mark this century.
In EuroBasket 2022, we have witnessed Luka Doncic explode for 47 and Lauri Markkanen dropping 43 points. It's second and tied-seventh in all-time scoring.
"I couldn't scout all the games in other groups, but I've seen the scores, and productivity is really high. I like that as a basketball fan and a coach," Greece coach Dimitris Itoudis said.
"All the coaches try to get the best out of their players. When you have a great shooter coming off the screen, you are going to play him. Obst is like that, Wagner is good at reading switches, you draw back, he hits great shots. If Giannis is good in the open space or on the block, you got to give him that. You try to get the best of your players," Itoudis explained.
One of the greatest EuroBasket finals of all time, the 2007 spectacle between Russia and Spain, ended 60-59 in favor of Russia.
Now teams are scoring the same in two quarters, and no one is going to complain about it.
