Last week, NBA announced suspending Sarver for one year and fined him $10 million after an independent investigation concluded revealing racist and sexist behaviors. "I am beginning the process of seeking buyers for the Suns and Mercury," the owner claimed yesterday.
According to Ramona Shelbourne from ESPN, there are some notable names on the list of possible buyers. Former president and CEO of Amazon Jeff Bezos, former Disney CEO Bob Iger, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, and Washington Wizards minority governor Laurene Powell Jobs are mentioned.
The Suns have been valued at $1.8 billion by Forbes in 2021. Bezos and Ellison are currently 4th and 6th on the Forbes billionaires list with net worth of 142 billion and 94.4 billion accordingly.
Sarver will choose the buyer himself. However, the NBA will have to approve the new ownership.
If the deal goes through, it will be the third sale of an NBA team in recent years. The Utah Jazz sold for $1.66 billion in 2020, and the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx sold for $1.5 billion in 2021.
