The new Maccabi Tel Aviv guard entered the EuroBasket First Team after averaging 17.1 points, 2.0 rebounds, 8.5 assists, 1.2 steals, and 16.7 EFF over nine matches.
He even delivered in the final, racking up a double-double of 14 points and 11 assists, although Jorge Garbajosa recently revealed that Brown was facing health issues before the ultimate match of the competition.
"For all purposes, 12 Spaniards have played. Despite what they say, Lorenzo has felt the weight of the Spanish shirt like other national team members, and to say otherwise would be untrue. The night before the final, Brown had an exhaustion attack [extreme fatigue], diagnosed by the doctors.
He could not rest and could not even move. We had many doubts if he would be able to play in the final. He has done everything to make it.
He celebrated the victory probably the most. The team loves him a lot, and it could be seen throughout the whole tournament," Garbajosa told MARCA.
"Brown has come to help Spanish basketball and fulfill his dream," the president of the Spanish Basketball Federation continued. "We made the decision assuming that there was going to be criticism, but at all times, we seek the best for the team. Time tells us that it was a good decision, but it is also what we had to do.
Lorenzo wanted to play and we needed him. Even young players like Juan Nunez were able to benefit from his ability to make their teammates better."
Jorge Garbajosa also spoke about Lorenzo Brown's future in the Spanish national team.
"Lorenzo is not here for just a single EuroBasket," he stressed. "I don't like someone who comes to give us a hand and say goodbye. The idea is that Lorenzo will continue with us. A program is for at least three years, the cycle until the Paris Olympics [2024].
Then we will look at the circumstances we have and will see if we can continue together. Lorenzo felt very comfortable and seemed happy. He has been integrated into the team very quickly," Garbajosa concluded.
