Coach Udoka has been suspended for the entire 2022-23 NBA season for a violation of team policies, the club announced. The decision is effective immediately, while the decision about Udoka's future will be made later.
The punishment is a result of an intimate relationship with a female member of the organization, which was first believed to be consensual. According to The Athletic, Udoka was later accused of making unwanted comments toward the woman, which led to the launch of the investigation by the franchise.
"I want to apologize to our players, fans, the entire Celtics organization, and my family for letting them down," Udoka said in a statement. "I am sorry for putting the team in this difficult situation, and I accept the team's decision. Out of respect for everyone involved, I will have no further comment."
Interim head coach Joe Mazzulla will lead the team throughout the upcoming season.
With Udoka under the helm, the Celtics won 51 games in the regular season last year and advanced to the NBA Finals, ultimately losing to the Golden State Warriors.
