Draymond Green is entering the final guaranteed year of his contract with the Golden State Warriors. With the 2023-24 season being a player option, the two sides were searching for a solution throughout the offseason.
However, it now seems that the deal is not going to get done, at least not until the start of the regular season.
Talking with the press at the Warriors Media Day, Green confirmed it.
"At this point, whether I'd like to or not... I don't think it will happen so I'm just focused on this season and being as great as I can be as I know I'm capable of being, and winning another championship, reaching my individual goals as well. That's my main focus," Draymond explained.
Two other notable players in Andrew Wiggins (unrestricted free agent in 2023) and Jordan Poole (restricted free agent in 2023) are entering their contract years as well this upcoming season.
Talking about the situation, Draymond Green noted that their circumstances are different compared to his.
"I think it weighs on everyone differently," Green explained. "I think the way a contract situation would weigh on me is totally different than the way it would weigh on Jordan Poole who's never signed a big contract.
I think all of that matters as well. When you're in different positions in your career, you know [whether] you have security or you don't. I think all of those things play a part in how one may react to being in a contract year. To each its own."
Green later ensured that he will take the matter into his own hands to guarantee himself a deal at the end of the year.
"Some people are motivated by contract years, some people are nervous and struggle during contract years. I think it's all based on a player. For me personally, any time [I'm] in a contract year, it's motivation," he explained.
"That's kind of how I approach it, that's how I view it. It's always been the way I viewed it. I've historically been the guy to bet on myself. Even when others didn't believe, I've always felt confident betting on myself and nothing changes for me now," Green concluded.
The Warriors training camp began on September 24th. Their first game of the preseason is scheduled against the Washington Wizards on Friday, September 30th.
