Some teams are better at this task than others. However, there are some teams that are not good neither at winning nor at setting themselves up for winning later.
In the NBA, winning is usually associated with getting to the playoffs. When you get there, you can win it all even without holding the home court advantage in the First Round.
One of the more depressing records to hold in US professional sports is associated with the playoffs. For many years, the Seattle Mariners of the MLB was the franchise that held the record for most consecutive seasons without making it to the playoffs.
However, it all changed last night when the Mariners won 2-1 against the Oakland Athletics and clinched a playoff berth for the first time since 2001.
The Sacramento Kings hold the infamous record now. Kings fans haven't seen their favorite team make it to the postseason since 2006.
For perspective, Clifford Robinson, who was drafted in 1989, still played in the league, Chris Paul was named Rookie of the Year, and the iPhone wasn't invented yet.
Kings fans didn't want this day to come, let's hope they can get rid of the title the next year. The 2022-23 NBA season for the Kings starts with a matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers on October 19th.
