Credit: EuroLeague Credit EuroLeagueDejan Bodiroga and Marshall Glickman have recently taken over the management of the EuroLeague. While we analyzed at how their leadership would look like, Glickman has revealed a couple of details himself.
"Money comes in when it makes sense because people who invest money are interested in the return of their money. That's business, that's capitalism, and that's reality," he told Chris Kaouris of the Greek TV NovaSports. "I think if we can develop the kind of platform that I envision, what Dejan envisions, and ultimately the clubs buy into, then I do think there will be capital that comes to us."
Glickman says he will look into restoring the competitive balance in the league. With clubs' budgets ranging by times and not percentage, the new CEO of the organization says it will be a priority.
"I'm specifically interested in better competitive balance," Glickman said to Nova Sports. "We have to recognize that we have clubs owned by big football clubs, we have to recognize that there are clubs owned by wealthy individuals in countries where the economy is not the same."
"I think it's very important that all the clubs that play in the EuroLeague have a chance to fight for a championship. I think there are steps we can take moving forward," he explained.
One of the steps that Glickman believes would improve the league would some sort of a salary cap. Additionally, he would like to offer some incentives for the teams as well.
"I think there is a form of a salary cap. Salary cap is not a simple document, it's 500 pages of complexity that you need an army of lawyers to understand," he continued. "I think the fundamental concept of putting some constraints on salaries but also putting some incentives because I think it's very important that players are our partners."
"When everything grows, the players should share that upside, the coaches should share that upside, and the owners should share that upside. That's the kind of system I would like to pursue," Glickman explained his view on Nova Sports.
Recently, news came out that businessmen from Dubai are interested in joining the EuroLeague in various ways. It would involve a club with a wild card. The sheikhs are also hoping to host the Final Four for several years as well.
Talking about the interest, Glickman expressed that he welcomes it and hopes it can manifest into something greater.
"I think it's really great that there's interest in EuroLeague basketball coming from Dubai. Where that goes, where that leads, what the specifics are, I have no idea," the CEO shared. "We're going there soon to hear them, I'm excited about that. EuroLeague executives have been there and have interfaced with them in the past as well as many of our clubs. There seems to be a lot of excitement around the idea. What that idea means, how can it manifest over time, I really don't know."
