According to Griner's lawyer Alexandr D. Boykov, she is beginning to lose optimism regarding the case.
"She is not yet absolutely convinced that America will be able to take her home," Boykov said in a New York Times interview. "She is very worried about what the price of that will be, and she is afraid that she will have to serve the whole sentence here in Russia."
"Perhaps the verdict will somehow be changed and, perhaps, the sentence will be reduced, because the decision taken by the first court is very different from judicial practice," he told. "Considering all the circumstances, taking into account my client's personality traits and her admission of guilt, such a verdict should be absolutely impossible."
One of the biggest fears of his client, Boykov says, is the institution she will probably end up in as Russia is known to have harsh conditions in prisons.
Since Griner's detention, Russia wants to free her in exchange for several high-profile prisoners, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced.
"It’s an old building, and made of stone," the lawyer noted about the place Griner is currently held in. "When it is hot outside, it's too hot, and when it's cold outside, it is too cold."
If Griner's appeal is unsuccessful and she is not released, she may be returned to the same place she's currently detained in or moved to a different facility, or a different section of that same prison.
