Billy Baron made a crucial triple, while Nick Weiler-Babb could not convert either of his clutch free throws in the dying seconds.
"It was a close second half. I think my players had a very good performance down the stretch. Of course, we hit a very difficult shot with Billy [Baron]. We were also lucky because Nick Weiler-Babb, who is a great player and a great shooter, missed 2 free throws, but it happens," coach Ettore Messina said post-game.
Despite a hard-fought victory, Messina had a hard time celebrating. The game was marked by a worrisome Shavon Shields' injury.
"Nicolo Melli really took the team on his shoulders and carried us to come back when everything was going, let's say, downhill after the injury of Shavon [Shields]. The only thing is that I have a hard time to celebrate. Shields' injury really worries us," he admitted.
With less than a minute to go in the first quarter, Shields left the court with a sprained ankle. He reached the bench in pain and later did not appear on the floor.
Shields was not the only player who sustained a setback in this game. Othello Hunter exited the match early due to a hamstring injury.
"Bayern played well, even after they lost Othello [Hunter]. So two teams plagued by injuries, I think it was a great game to watch and we were lucky to escape with a win," Messina concluded the post-game interview with EuroLeague TV.
