The Mavericks have learned that the NBA does not credit assists thrown off the backboard. It is stated in the scorer's manual, and the decision during the game was correct.
In the episode, Luka Doncic attempted what looked like to be a layup which Dorian Finney-Smith ended with a putback dunk. After the match, the Slovenian star explained that it wasn't a purposefully taken shot.
"That was a pass … I'm not going to [attempt] a layup and not touch the rim," Luka Doncic said, via Tim MacMahon of ESPN.
In the end, Doncic finished the match with a near triple-double of 32 points (8/14 2PT, 4/9 3PT, 4/5 FT), 7 rebounds, and 10 assists.
