He was named the temporary acting head coach for FIBA EuroBasket 2025 Pre-Qualifiers, while the Croatian Basketball Federation is still in search of a regular bench boss.
Aco Petrovic will lead Croatia in November 2022 and February 2023 windows. In the upcoming matches on November 10 and 13, Croatia will meet Austria and Poland.
"When I took over the sports director post four weeks ago, I did not expect it to go in this direction. However, considering everything that happened in the first round of talks with potential candidates and after I practically visited all the players, maybe it is a logical solution," the 63-year-old Croatian specialist said after the appointment.
"At this moment, I am the most informed in terms of form and follow-up, but for me, this job is an additional burden. I am aware of how important this next window is for future summers."
Petrovic returns to the NT head coaching position for the fourth time in his career.
He led the national team in Croatia's last-medal journey in FIBA EuroBasket 1995, EuroBasket 2001, and Rio Olympics in 2016.
