Meanwhile, the Nets lost to Indiana Pacers at Barclays Center, 116-125. Brooklyn started the 2022-23 season with a 1-5 record.

The Nets were leading 25-20 with 1:10 to play in the first quarter when Watanabe's awkward moment happened.

Andrew Nembhard's shot from deep was off the mark, while the ball bounced off the rim of the basket and onto the backboard.

Indiana Pacers' James Johnson and Goga Bitadze went up for the offensive rebound, but Watanabe reached the ball first, could not control it properly, and dunked the ball into his own net.

The Japanese forward finished the losing effort with 5 points and 2 rebounds.

Kyrie Irving led all scorers with 35 points for the Nets. Kevin Durant added 26.

Bennedict Mathurin had 32 points for the winners. Tyrese Haliburton aided his teammate with 26 points.
