U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner, facing a nine-year prison sentence in Russia after being convicted on drug charges, has been transferred to a penal colony about 500 kilometers (300 miles) southeast of Moscow, her lawyers said on Thursday.

"We can confirm that Brittney began serving her sentence at IK-2 in Mordovia. We visited her early this week," lawyers Maria Blagovolina and Alexander Boikov said in a statement.

"Brittney is doing as well as could be expected and trying to stay strong as she adapts to a new environment," they added.

Reuters reports that Mordovia is the region where another American, Paul Whelan, is serving a 16-year sentence in a different penal settlement after being convicted of espionage charges that he denies.

The 32-year-old Griner has been in custody since February after Moscow airport officials found cannabis oil in her luggage. US executives saidshe was wrongfully imprisoned and should be released.

Britney Griner's appeal against her conviction on drug charges was denied by a Moscow court.
