Recently, Curry went on the The Old Man and The Three podcast with JJ Redick. When he was asked to explain how the trademark shot appeared in his repertoire, the Golden State Warriors superstar guard remembered a game in 2013.
"It's either Game 3 or Game 4 of our first playoff series against Denver in 2013. It was the third quarter, I went on a crazy run, I think I got 20-something in the quarter and one of the last threes was right in front of Denver's bench," Curry started off.
"We got into that series, we started as the sixth seed, we started at Denver, came back [with series result being] 1-1. I was walking out there, it was haze all over the court, the fans were 75% full 20 minutes before the tip-off, they were chanting 'Warriors', got a nice aroma in the building. It was just an amazing atmosphere, so you get kind of wrapped up in it," the player recalled being able to enjoy Oracle Center playoff experience of the first time.
Curry made 6 triples against the Nuggets that night. After that game, the Warriors guard set a new NBA record for the most three-pointers made to start a playoff career with 18.
"The third quarter happened. We were on this crazy run knocking shots down left and right. I was right in front of Denver's bench, JaVale McGee was standing up with five or six guys around him, he got the ball in the corner," Curry continued the story.
"In that situation, when you rise up, everybody is just talking trash behind you. For some reason, I got that out-of-body experience, I shot it, and I never had a shot feeling better than that. I turned around, I kind of looked at JaVale, and just ran off, and it went in," he recalled. "I didn't even check to see if it went in, I was waiting for the noise. It was a really special moment to have the rational confidence to even try it in a playoff game. It was dope."
Contrary to what Curry told, it was Carl Landry who passed the ball to him on that episode. Nevertheless, the 2013 playoffs propelled Curry into the sight of every NBA fan that year. He has remained there ever since.
