His exaggerated celebration after a dunk during the game, in addition to a heated argument he had with Nigel Hayes-Davis at another point, made Fenerbahce die-hard supporters furious.
Melli, who wore the Fenerbahce jersey between 2017 and 2019 before he moved to the NBA, posted a statement on his social media accounts about the reactions he received.
"Since in the last 3 days, my social media accounts are full of insults, I want to make clear a couple of things.
What happened in the game against Fenerbahce is part of the game, it had nothing to do with the respect and the love I have for the Fenerbahçe organization, my former teammates, and the fans.
I will always be proud to have worn that jersey, and I will always look forward to playing at Ulker Arena. You can continue to write whatever, I will continue to block you. But mostly, I will continue to love Istanbul and especially Fenerbahce."
Melli, who has played a total of 10 games in the EuroLeague this season, is holding averages of 8.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per outing.
His team is at the bottom of the table with a feeble 3-7 record, having lost their last six games.
