Griner was freed in exchange for an arms dealer Viktor Bout. The procedure was successfully performed at the Abu Dhabi airport, RIA Novosti report.
US President Joe Biden has terminated Bout's 25-year prison sentence. Additionally, Biden spoke to Griner by phone, a White House official said to CBS News. The call happened in the Oval Office, where the president was joined by Cherelle Griner, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
Griner's health will be evaluated following the swap, per standard procedure.
Bout has spent the past 12 years in an American jail for conspiring to support terrorists and kill American citizens.
"She is safe. She is on a plane. She is on her way home," President Biden tweeted.
