Rudy Fernandez, who was injured in the Spanish Super Cup final featuring Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, underwent surgery last September to solve a wrist problem that has been dragging on since the summer.

The Spanish veteran was out of basketball action not for "more than a month," as the initial estimate would have him, but for almost three.

37-year-old Fernandez fell hard on his wrist during the final. He went straight to the bench, from which he never returned. The captain of the Spanish NT was in great pain.

After the match, Fernandez underwent an MRI to find out the extent of the injury. Later, it was decided to perform surgery.

Since then, the small forward has been sidelined and hasn't played a minute of basketball this season.

However, things are about to change for Rudy. Real Madrid's head coach Chus Mateo announced that the player is about to make his return in the EuroLeague game against LCDL ASVEL Villeurbanne Thursday (Dec. 22).

Rudy Fernandez, who lead the Spanish National Team this summer in the EuroBasket, is still one of the key pieces for Real Madrid's backcourt. Last season, the player averaged 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists for 7.5 PIR in the EuroLeague.

Rudy Fernandez agreed on a one-year extension with the Royal club last off-season. He has been a member of Real since 2012.

After having lost two of their last three games, Real Madrid now have a win-loss record of 9-5 in the EuroLeague and are placed 5th in the tournament's standings.

Additionally, Mateo revealed that Gaby Deck has also returned to practice and both have practiced as expected. Hanga is still out, while Tavares, Causeur, Abalde and Hezonja have missed the last two practices due to flu.
