However, the projected no. 1 overall pick of the 2023 NBA Draft was not sure he should have received the title.
"Hopefully, my future titles will eclipse this performance, hopefully, but it was a pleasant experience overall. That's more what I remember rather than the title of MVP," the player told. "I don't really understand it when I see that Juhann [Begarin] had a PIR of 38, and I had 32. Almost no stat of his was below mine."
"I doubt why he was not voted MVP but I think he deserves it anyway," Wembanyama explained. "Was my potential rewarded more than the talent I expressed tonight? No, I don't think so. Is it a major trophy? I will rejoice when I have a trophy with my team."
Wembanyama finished the match with 27 points (11/16 2PT, 1/9 3PT, 2/2 FT), 12 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks for 32 PIR. Meanwhile, Juhann Begarin scored 25 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, dished out 7 assists, made 4 steals and a block for 38 PIR.
Wembanyama also participated in the three-point contest but finished it in last place with 12 points and did not go past the first round.
